Published purpose

March 2019 – In Afghanistan, the United Nations estimates that 6.3 million people are in need of life-saving humanitarian assistance, up from 4.2 million in 2018. Over the course of the last year, a severe drought, continued insecurity and migrant returns have all resulted in a deterioration of the humanitarian situation. Needs across the country remain high, and vulnerability to natural disaster remains. With GAC’s support, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) supports the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund which channels resources to humanitarian partners to respond to the critical needs of conflict-affected populations, providing much needed flexibility in a rapidly evolving context. Project activities include: (1) promoting needs-based assistance in accordance with humanitarian principles; (2) strengthening the coordination and coherence of humanitarian assistance; (3) strategically funding priorities as identified under the Humanitarian Response Plan; and (4) expanding the delivery of humanitarian assistance in hard-to-reach areas by partnering with local and international non-governmental organizations.
