March 2015 – Ongoing conflicts in Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile States, as well as an influx of refugees from South Sudan, have contributed to a significant deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Sudan. Some 6.6 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, including 3.1 million internally displaced people, 700,000 refugees and asylum seekers, 1.2 million malnourished children under the age of five, and 1.6 million people who are food insecure. Food security and malnutrition continue to be priority sectors for humanitarian assistance, as well as health and sanitation needs. With DFATD’s support and that of other donors, the International Organization for Migration is providing access to emergency health services, living conditions, and protection services among crisis-affected people throughout Sudan. Project activities include: (1) providing water, sanitation, and hygiene services, as well as shelter and non-food items for 96,040 individuals and 2,600 households; (2) providing priority health care for 250,000 conflict and disaster-affected internally displaced persons in North Darfur, South Darfur and Central Darfur; (3) supporting 32,860 conflict-affected people, including host community members, to establish livelihoods, and providing agricultural assets to support income generation; and (4) full implementation of the Displacement Tracking Matrix Registration system, which improves the efficiency and accuracy of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable populations through registration and monitoring of internally displaced people and refugees.
