Published purpose

The Adaptation Fund was established originally under the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2001. It launched its operations in 2010 and has, since 2019, been serving the Paris Agreement alongside the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environmental Facility (GEF). The Adaptation Fund has is an effective global financial mechanism, focusing on adaptation and capacity building in developing countries. Since it started operating in 2007, the Adaptation Fund has supported 33 million people, protected over 380,000 ha of natural habitats and trained more than 1 million people in climate resilience. The Fund's investments contribute to reducing exposure to climate-related hazards and threats; strengthening institutional governance, including policies and regulations, as well as awareness and ownership at the local level; and increasing adaptive capacity and ecosystem resilience in response to climate change.
