Published purpose

The recent intensification of the conflict between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has resulted in recurring population displacements in several of the districts of Northern Province, Sri Lanka. The immediate needs of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities include access to basic healthcare and water and sanitation services, and emergency shelter. CIDA's contribution is used to provide quality general and emergency surgical care in Vavuniya District Hospital, benefiting 145,000 people affected by the conflict in Vavuniya District of Northern Sri Lanka. The Doctors without Borders team also acts as a surgical referral point for the population of the LTTE-controlled areas of Mulattivu and Killinochchi Districts.
