Published purpose

There are an estimated 180,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Chad, living in extremely insecure conditions. Despite a recently signed peace agreement, new fighting erupted in November 2007, limiting access to some of the IDP sites. While the planned deployment of international security forces may create opportunities for return, this will need to be accompanied by reconstruction, rule of law and reconciliation between all groups involved. In 2008, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) continues to focus on protection and assistance activities for IDPs, and to promote durable solutions to resolve situations of displacement. The UNHCR also works to advocate for the humanitarian space required to deliver protection and assistance, including effective coordination with national and regional entities. Finally, work also includes improving assistance to existing IDP sites and contingency planning to assist new arrivals.
