Published purpose
Despite modest improvements in the international political environment resulting from the Six Party Talks, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) continues to suffer from weak economic performance, food shortages, deteriorating public health, unsafe water and poor sanitation. In addition, the country is prone to natural disasters, which significantly affect vulnerable populations. CIDA's contribution is used to support the DPRK Red Cross Society's 2004-2010 strategy in the areas of health and care, disaster management, organizational development and humanitarian values. This strategy is implemented in close cooperation with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and partner Red Cross and Red Crescent national societies worldwide.
