Published purpose

Since late January 2008, Madagascar has been hit by two cyclones and experienced heavy rains, which have impacted most parts of the island, particularly the central Antananarivo plain. The resultant floods have affected heavily populated areas, including the capital city of Antananarivo, and damaged important farming areas. An estimated 239,000 people have been affected and require life-saving assistance including food, shelter, clean water, sanitation facilities and basic health services. CIDA's contribution supports UNICEF's activities in several key areas of the coordinated humanitarian response, namely the health, nutrition and food security, shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene, and protection sectors.
