Published purpose

October 9, 2009 - Typhoon Ketsana hit the central part of Vietnam on September 29 with wind gusts of up to 160 km/h. It was the strongest typhoon to hit Vietnam since 1999. As of October 9, the human toll of Ketsana in Vietnam was 170 dead, 14 missing, and up to 3 million people affected, of whom more than 150,000 have been left homeless. Through this project, Plan International Canada provides emergency relief for 4,660 families affected by the typhoon and floods in eight communes in the district of Da Krong, Quang Tri province. Quang Tri province is a mountainous area and 80% of the population is made up of ethnic minorities. With a 45% poverty rate, the population of Da Krong is highly vulnerable to natural disasters. The specific objectives of the project are to provide life-saving support to families affected by the typhoon, especially children and young people, through the provision of clean water and safe shelter.
