Published purpose
In 2010, both Sudan and Chad still face significant crises related to conflict and population displacement. Overall, more than 5.2 million Sudanese remain displaced from their homes. The most notable crisis remains that in Darfur, where some 2.7 million people are still unable to return to their homes, but an upsurge in violence in southern Sudan in 2009 saw more than 300,000 people newly displaced, adding to a large population still unable to return home following Sudan's long civil war. Across the border from Darfur, in eastern Chad, as many as 500,000 people affected by regional conflict and insecurity (Sudanese refugees, internally displaced Chadians, and host communities) also rely on international assistance for survival. Canadian support of ICRC's operations in Sudan and Chad is helping it to provide much-needed food, water and sanitation, medical care, emergency shelter, and protection to populations that are often outside the reach of other humanitarian agencies.
