5 January 2011 - Pakistan recently experienced the worst monsoon flooding in its history. At its height, over 20 million people were affected, and over 7 million people were made homeless by the flooding. While most of the flood-affected people have returned to their home areas, approximately 14 million people still require humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs, and to begin the process of resuming their normal lives. CIDA is supporting the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to provide emergency and transitional shelter, as well as relief items, to 1.45 million families in flood-affected districts. IOM is providing a dedicated platform to handle the receipt, transport, warehousing and distribution of non-food items and shelter materials. In addition to the provision of shelter and relief items, IOM is implementing a number of Quick Impact Projects to repair damaged infrastructure and provide short-term employment to affected populations. Mobile medical and referral clinics are providing health services, and IOM is also building on its mass communications and public information outreach capacity to ensure the dissemination of reliable, accurate and timely information for all those affected by the floods.
