Published purpose

This project aims to improve the resilience of vulnerable coastal communities, particularly women, to climate change and to protect and restore marine and coastal biodiversity in Vietnam. It supports coastal areas in Hue, Gia Lai and Can Tho, located respectively in North-Central, South-Central and Southern Vietnam. These areas are highly vulnerable to climate-related disasters and are experiencing biodiversity loss due to land-use change, overexploitation of natural resources, climate change, and pollution. Project activities include: (1) installing early warning systems and improving access to climate and disaster-risk information in selected communes; (2) supporting nature-based enterprises and sustainable livelihoods initiatives; and (3) rehabilitating and expanding mangrove forests and coral reefs to protect biodiversity, strengthen ecosystem resilience, and increase carbon sequestration. The project aims to reach 20,000 direct beneficiaries, 75% of whom are women, who rely significantly on coastal and marine ecosystems for their livelihoods. It will also benefit 200,000 indirect beneficiaries (50,000 households), including surrounding villages and hamlets. In addition, the project seeks to rehabilitate 50,000 hectares of marine and coastal ecosystems, generating environmental and socio-economic benefit for neighbouring communities.
