Published purpose
2011-01-25; Starting late December 2010, Sri Lanka experienced torrential rains causing severe flooding and landslides in the Eastern and Central regions of the country leading to 43 deaths and affecting 1,060,273 people. At the height of the disaster, around the 13th and 14th of January, over 320,000 persons were displaced in temporary emergency shelters in the worst-affected areas. The disaster further resulted in approximately 6,000 destroyed and 23,000 damaged homes. CIDA aims to support CHF to improve the health, physical security and household livelihoods of flood-affected families. Specific activities include: the provision of household items; the rehabilitation and cleaning of community wells and latrines; the delivery of hygiene and sanitation awareness training to members of flood-affected households; and the supplying of agricultural inputs (seeds, fertilizer and tools).
