Published purpose
With CIDA support, Plan Canada is addressing the basic needs of internally displaced people (IDPs) in two camps in North Darfur, Sudan by providing life-saving emergency water, sanitation and hygiene services. The camps targeted by this project have experienced a number of conflicts and displacements since the beginning of the violence that started in Darfur in 2003. Plan’s activities are expected to directly benefit over 65,000 IDPs (43,000 in Zam Zam Camp and 21,000 in Tawila Camp). Project activities include: the distribution of 10,000 treated bed nets; rehabilitation of 9 community water sources and providing chlorination for 18,000 households; installation of 13 school drinking water facilities; repair of 12 hand pumps and training of 50 hand pump mechanics; and, rehabilitation or construction of 1,000 community latrines and installation of hand washing facilities in 13 schools.
