August 27, 2012 - With CIDA support, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is addressing the basic needs of an increased caseload of Sudanese refugees in South Sudan during the second half of 2012. Due to ongoing conflict, the number of Sudanese refugees seeking protection in South Sudan significantly increased in 2012, from 85,000 at the beginning of the year, to over 200,000 at mid-year. In Upper Nile state, South Sudan, IOM is providing life-saving interventions to over 77,000 refugees and 25,000 stranded South Sudanese returnees. Activities focus on the provision, in cooperation with other humanitarian agencies, of increased access to water, sanitation and hygiene, mobile medical support, common transportation services and assisted repatriation of returnees.
