Published purpose
September 2012 - Rwanda hosts 54,000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo who have fled their country of origin due to insecurity. Since the end of April 2012, Rwanda has received a new massive influx of over 19,000 refugees from Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo fleeing fighting between renegade soldiers and government forces in North Kivu. This has resulted into the establishment of a fourth refugee camp in Rwanda at Kigeme in Southern Province. The refugee population, in all four camps, lives in a precarious situation due to a lack of access to land for cultivation and limited livelihoods opportunities. Through this emergency operation, the World Food Programme will provide targeted food assistance to meet the needs of the refugees in Rwanda. Activities under this operation include general food distribution, supplementary and therapeutic feeding and school snacks, as well as some livelihoods activities. Returnees will receive a resettlement package to cater for their food needs in the first three months of their return to their country of origin.
