December 2012 -Typhoon Bopha (local name "Pablo") made landfall on the eastern coast of Mindanao island in southern Philippines on 5 December as a category five typhoon, the most destructive storm to hit the country this year. Typhoon Bopha brought heavy rains and strong winds, leaving a trail of destruction to homes, livelihoods, and critical public infrastructure as it crossed over the southern Philippines. The eastern provinces of Mindanao were the most affected. The International Committee of the Red Cross is an impartial, neutral and independent humanitarian entity that seeks to provide crisis-affected people with humanitarian assistance. With Canada's support, the International Committee of the Red Cross will: provide emergency food assistance, essential household item kits, shelter kits and emergency water trucking services and repair hospital and rural healthcare facilities, and conduct health outreach activities. The ICRC will provide the humanitarian assistance to 210,000 typhoon-affected people in Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental and Suriago del Sur, three of the worst-hit provinces in Mindanao, Philippines.
