Published purpose

March 2013 - There are still an estimated 1.7 million people living in internally displaced persons camps in the Darfur region. Despite efforts by the local authorities to resettle internally displaced persons in their original rural areas, security threats and lack of access to basic services remain deterrents to sustainable, permanent returns. With Canada's support, Development and Peace is addressing the emergency health and nutrition needs of approximately 206,200 internally displaced people in four camps as well as host communities in Central Darfur, Sudan. Project activities will focus on: supporting four health facilities and three nutrition centres; providing supplemental emergency feeding to 18,480 children under five and 7,920 pregnant or lactating mothers; providing essential drugs and equipment, including distributing long-lasting mosquito nets, clean delivery kits and vaccinations; and providing training on malnutrition to community health workers, specifically for midwives in camps and host communities.
