December 2015 - The humanitarian situation in Syria continues to deteriorate as a result of the civil war and intensified violence in the country. The United Nations estimates that 13.5 million people inside Syria, including 6 million children, are in need of humanitarian assistance. Combined with over 4.2 million Syrians seeking refuge from the conflict in neighbouring countries, this is the largest number of people displaced from conflict in the world. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of people fleeing the conflict. With DFATD’s support, UNHCR is helping to address basic needs and increase access to essential services for vulnerable Syrian refugees in Lebanon. Project activities include: (1) maintaining and updating the files of Lebanon’s 1.2 million registered Syrian refugees; (2) ensuring primary and secondary health care access for up to 1 million individuals; (3) enrolling up to 17,000 Syrian children in second shift education; (4) providing cash assistance to up to 21,592 families; (5) distributing basic domestic items to up to 30,205 households; and (6) delivering winter assistance to up to 40,500 households. Key protection activities, community mobilization, border activities, child protection and sexual and gender-based violence activities will continue to be prioritized.
