Published purpose
The program aims to enhance the capacity of local non-governmental organizations working in the sectors of improving health outcomes and developing economic opportunities through micro-credit cooperatives for women. Gender programs are incorporated throughout. Good governance practices include transparent accounting training. One local partner, SALAMA, focuses on preventive community health programming in remote villages. The program delivers services in community preventive health, HIV/AIDS education and homecare for the chronically ill. The other local partner, CAIXA das Mulheres, provides a safe place for women to deposit their money and obtain credit to run their small businesses. Branches are located in Nampula, Nacala and Pemba. In conjunction with its partners, Cooperation Canada Mozambique (COCAMO) has developed a flexible and comprehensive capacity development program that is custom-designed to address the current and future organizational needs of its partners to become increasingly autonomous, effective, gender-sensitive and responsive to the program's beneficiaries.
