Published purpose

This project improves access to safe and sustainable water and sanitation facilities for individuals in 40 poor rural villages in the Machinga District. This is accomplished by strengthening the capacity of village committees to manage their water and sanitation facilities and it promotes the adoption of improved hygiene practices. This project also contributes to the district government's water and sanitation plans. The results of this project include: 1) decrease levels of communicable and water related diseases, particularly among women and children, 2) increase available time for women and girls, 3) increase community ownership and management of water and sanitation facilities, 4) increase the participation of women in community affairs and their visibility in positions of leadership, and 5) give women greater power over issues that directly affect them. This is one of two components of a project valued at $238,560. No funds were disbursed under the first component which has now been completed. The local partner is Emmanuel International Malawi.
