Published purpose

The project seeks to develop and apply a public-private approach to dental care in an area where 90 % of the population is composed of Mayan indigenous peoples that are extremely poor, marginalized and suffering from inadequate dental care. Through the transfer of expertise from Québec, the project is promoting awareness, prevention and treatment of dental needs targeted to students, mothers and other empoverished people. It is also promoting a sustainable and local solution by encouraging the use of Guatemalan volunteer dentists, and the formation of dental care comittees in participating villages. This is one of two parts of a project valued at $495,854. The first part is completed.
