Published purpose
This grant supports CIVICUS in implementing programs and achieving results based on its new strategic directions: (1) protecting the rights of civil society actors; (2) strengthening good practice within civil society; and (3) strengthening civil society's ability to influence the policies and practices of governments, international institutions, and the private sector. The overall goal is to support the right of citizens to organize, to strengthen civil society organizations, and to foster better terms of engagement between civil society and governments, the private sector, and international institutions. To achieve this goal, CIVICUS implements seven programs with CIDA support: (a) the Civil Society Index; (b) the Civil Society Watch; (c) participatory governance; (d) legitimacy, transparency, and accountability; (e) development cooperation and aid effectiveness; (f) the Affinity Group of National Associations Secretariat; and (g) the CIVICUS World Assembly. The CIVICUS programs are implemented around the world, in partnership with other organizations. In all its work, CIVICUS promotes knowledge generation and analysis, communication, multi-stakeholder engagement, and advocacy. The partners and chief beneficiaries of its programs are civil society organizations, activists, networks, and associations operating at local, national and international levels.
