Published purpose

The project aims to deploy 500 Canadian long-term and short-term observers to support the delivery of free and fair Ukrainian parliamentary elections in October 2012. This reflects Canada’s commitment to help strengthen democratic processes in Ukraine. The project enables 425 independent short-term observers to ensure the transparency and fairness of the election process on voting day. An additional 75 long-term observers aim to provide impartial assessments of the pre-election period by examining the administration of the election, the implementation of law and other regulations, the execution of the electoral campaign, and the political environment itself. Both short-term and long-term observers will cooperate closely with Ukraine's Central Election Commission, other observer missions, domestic observer groups, civil society organisations and the media. In carrying out this work, observers consider gender equality dimensions and support Ukrainian men and women in realising their electoral rights and exercising freedom of choice.
