Published purpose

This project focuses on the needs of Inuinnait—a distinct regional group of Inuit living in the Central Canadian Arctic. The Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq/Kitikmeot Heritage Society will record Inuinnait oral documentary heritage from a diminishing group of knowledge holders. The Society recognizes that the tangible memories and the knowledge, values, beliefs, and practices held by these Elders is the foundation of the Inuinnait culture. This unique knowledge will soon be gone, and with it, a significant proportion of Inuinnait culture and heritage will disappear entirely. This project will document Inuinnait experiences, heritage and knowledge through a series of first-person recorded interviews that are translated and transcribed, and available in English and Inuinnaqtun. This project will create a permanent record of documented traditional knowledge to help current and future generations connect to and maintain Inuinnait culture.
