Published purpose

Steel brittle fracture is a problem that puts billions of dollars worth of industrial facilities in cold climates at risk of life loss, lost production and environmental incidents. Although it is well known that steel becomes brittle at cold temperatures, what metallurgical factors affect the temperature at which steel becomes brittle is not well understood and therefore, not optimized. The objective of this project is to (1) develop improved processing parameters to take commonly available steels and optimize their cold temperature durability/toughness and (2) provide solutions to mitigate the risk of brittle fracture for steel already in service.
