Published purpose

CalAgua has a patent-pending technology for deconstructing oilsands with ionic liquids. Our small-footprint bitumen extraction technology is scalable, environmentally sustainable and ideal for greenfield oil sands developments. It unlocks the vast but currently unrecoverable oil sand resource that is “too deep to mine, and too shallow to steam.” This revolutionary process separates sand from bitumen without the creation of tailings ponds or significant greenhouse gases and can be built to required production size. Leveraging common processing steps, this project will optimize unit operations of i) a bitumen mining process and ii) an in-situ extraction process. The resulting data will guide further design of demonstration-sized plants.
