Ocean Ltd. has successfully isolated and synthesized a novel molecule from seaweed harvested in NL waters that inhibits the growth of cancer cells. The proposed study will validate the efficacy of this molecule's open-ring metabolites and investigate the hypothesis that its open-ring ester hydrolysis form contributes to, or is responsible for, bioactivity by employing in vitro bioassays to confirm the metabolites bioactivity. Oceans Ltd.'s discovery needs to be fully investigated and patent protected in case the biological activity of the parent compound is mediated in whole or in part by the metabolite form. Therefore, more in vitro data is required to ensure the firm's patent is expanded wide enough to cover both eventualities if the data indicates that is necessary.
