Published purpose
Integrated optical filters are essential building blocks for applications as diverse as datacom and telecom networks, optical signal processing, quantum optics and astrophotonics, where spectral control of multi-wavelength signals is required. Over the last decade, sidewall-corrugated Bragg gratings have emerged as the preferred nanophotonic solution for spectral shaping and filtering. However, the high-index contrast of silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform imposes strict limitations on the corrugation depths needed for narrowband filters that cannot be achieved even with state-of-the-art lithographic patterning available in silicon photonics foundries. The Project will utilize subwavelength grating (SWG) metamaterials, an enabling technology for optimizing and customizing the performance of integrated optical devices, to achieve spectrally engineered multi-line integrated filters based on Bragg gratings in silicon and silicon nitride metamaterial waveguides, with potentially unprecedented performance, for telecom applications.
