Published purpose

In spite of increasing maintenance costs, paved surfaces have generally been used solely for the purpose of automobile use. However, given the increase in paved surfaces and roadways, and in light of recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), nanotechnology, polymer science, sensory systems, and recycling, there is a school of thought that paved roadways can turn into multifunctional infrastructures. This Project seeks to reduce unplanned expensive surface repair activities, promote the use of high-performance pavement materials and enhance the understanding of weather impacts on road conditions and the safety of users. The overall goal of this Project is to develop an economically viable smart pavement surface that can contribute to lowering the life cycle cost of paved highways and optimizing safety in transportation and the movement of freight.
