Published purpose

The goal of the Project is to develop lasers and transmitters suitable for next generation optical satellite communications. Emphasis will be put on developing sources that can mitigate limitations of current telecom-based technology. Examples include developing sources in the mid-IR (3-5 m, 8-12 m), to minimize weather condition sensitivity. Two approaches will be explored to efficiently generate the mid-IR light. The first approach is based on 1550 nm to mid-IR wavelength conversion in nonlinear crystals, while the second one is based on the direct emission of mid-IR light from perovskite materials.
