Published purpose
According to Health Canada, in 2019, about 11% of Canadians aged 20 and over were living with diabetes, and the rate has been increasing. Diabetes causes damage to blood vessels and leads to diabetic retinopathy (DR), ultimately leading to the growth of new vessels, called neovascularization (NV). NV can lead to retinal damage or separation, especially when the new vessels rupture. Presence of untreated NV is associated with loss of vision. In this project, the Firm proposes to develop digital image processing and machine learning techniques to detect, characterize, and analyze vascular patterns related to neovascularization and outcomes are expected to assist ophthalmologists in performing timely diagnosis and follow-up of patients with advanced DR.
