Published purpose

To enhance Canada’s abilities in transformative, high-risk, high-reward research with the potential for game-changing scientific discoveries and technological breakthroughs, the NRC will contribute funding towards Mitacs Internships at eligible host organizations that align with the Government of Canada’s reimagined support for science and innovation being realized through the creation of the NRC’s Challenge Programs and Supercluster Support Programs. Mitacs is a key player at the interface between academic and industry research, will enable the NRC to leverage its resources and rapidly increase the extent and effectiveness of its engagement with the academic, not-for-profit, and private sectors. NRC will provide funding to Mitacs that will be used solely to fund two streams of Mitacs internship programs: 1) Mitacs Accelerate Internships will support graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at Canadian universities to undertake research internships at Canadian private sector and not-for-profit host organizations collaborating with the NRC; and 2) Mitacs Globalink Research Awards will support international graduate students for internships with host Canadian universities collaborating with the NRC. Internships will be part of collaborative research projects as part of approved NRC challenge and supercluster support programs. Internship eligible activities include research, development, and prototype development intended to support research, development, adoption and/or adaptation of innovative or technology-driven new or improved products, services or processes in Canada up to their commercialization.
