Published purpose
Electric Vehicle owners in Canada often discover that public charging stations are not functional, leaving them stranded and frustrated. The issue of reliability and downtime was flagged by CSA in its most recent report on charging infrastructure; it is negatively impacting public perception and acceptance of EVs and delaying the electrification of the automotive sector. In some recent cases, malfunctioning EV charging stations have even caused damage to the EV, requiring them to be towed and incurring thousands of dollars in repairs. This presents an unacceptable liability for EV station operators. Most charging stations are currently tested only at installation time by electricians. In this project, Tecium will develop a smart EV charger handheld tester giving information about the functionality of the charging station.
