Published purpose
The Client's state of the art rope-on-command (ROC) gear effectively removes all vertical lines and buoys from the water column and provides fixed trapped crab and lobster fishermen a method of fishing that poses no entanglement risks to marine mammals, most notably the critically endangered North Atlantic Right Whale. The primary goal of this project is to develop an innovative enhancement to this ROC technology that increases the visibility of the buoy system once it is deployed and reaches the ocean surface. This addresses concerns from fishermen that the existing buoy is hard to locate in harsh conditions such as fog, low visibility, high sea states, tides and currents.
