Published purpose

Smallfood’s current method of fermentation is fed-batch, where feeding for 10h with substrate and supplements extends the duration of culture and achieves higher cell density, 55 g/L biomass. Due to high oxygen requirement of the protein production process, further increase in biomass yield has been a challenge using fed-batch process. To achieve higher biomass yields without oxygen depletion, repeated fed-batch where harvesting 50% or more of a completed (fed) batch and leaving the remaining cells available is to use as an inoculum for cycles will increase the biomass yield. Therefore, the current project is designed to develop a repeated fed-batch fermentation process for Smallfood’s proprietary strain.
