Published purpose

Mines need to achieve exceedingly low contaminant concentrations for regulatory compliant discharge of treated mine water to the environment. The firms mine water treatment technologies convert dissolved metals from mine water into insoluble solids. Alternative technologies to separate these insoluble metals solids are either too big, and/or too costly, and/or too complex. In this proposed project, integration of the Removable Skin Layer (“RSL”) membrane into firms technologies will be tested on water samples obtained from metal mines and coal mines. Robustness and effectiveness of contaminant removal performance will be tested and optimized at bench and small pilot scales of operation.
