Published purpose

The research will allow the design Ultra-Cor® (UC) structures with spans 30m-40m compliant with CSA-S6. The code allows for buckling using FEA as opposed to code equations, but currently we do not have the calibration data needed to fully exploit this allowance. The primary design variable used in this approach is the radius of the plate with large radius plates having reduced resistance to global buckling. With UC pushing for flatter radii and longer spans, global buckling is more and more becoming the governing failure mechanism of designs. The goal of this research project is to better understand the global buckling behaviour of UC and develop a design approach calibrated for UC to leverage situations where global buckling governs.
