Published purpose
CERT Systems has developed a technology for conversion of carbon dioxide captured from air into ethylene. This Air-to-Chemicals (A2C) process involved ambient CO2 being captured in a hydroxide solution as liquid carbonate. This liquid carbonate is fed directly into CERT's proprietary electrolyzer which converts the captured CO2 into ethylene using electricity and water as feedstocks. In this project, CERT will demonstrate the scalability of its process by adapting technology demonstrated in 5 cm2 reactors to electrolyzer cells of 200 cm2. These cells will additionally be stacked to further increase throughput. This will be an important step towards building a commercial pilot unit.
