Published purpose

The Project brings together academic leaders in quantum technology, with national laboratory experts in standards and industry specialists in measurement systems to deliver an easily deployable quantum voltage standard. For every field, standards are essential to ensuring safety, quality, and reliability. For innovation, standards bring precision that enables improved performance. The quantum field cannot rely on last century’s classical standards (such as a kg mass placed in a safe). Instead, a new family of quantum standards are needed to bring higher precision and compatibility with quantum devices. Fortunately, quantum technology enables such a device, that is itself a quantum circuit and whose precision is traceable solely to fundamental constants. It builds standards from uniquely quantum effects and in systems that are extraordinarily engineerable. These are essential to building and perfecting the control systems that will be at the heart of all quantum computers and sensors and will sustain Canada’s leadership in the quantum field
