Published purpose

The project focuses on developing an advanced, high-sensitivity magnetic field sensor utilizing a novel quantum material system based on a twodimensional hole gas (2DHG) in compressively strained germanium on silicon (cs-GoS). Magnetic field sensing is essential in various applications, from healthcare and automotive industries to quantum computing and space exploration. Existing sensors, such as those using NV centres, NMR or classical Hall effect technology, have limitations in scalability, stability, cost, and sensitivity. The cs-GoS-based sensors aim to overcome these challenges, offering improved sensitivity, scalability for mass production, and compatibility with ultra-large-scale integration (ULSI) technology. This quantum material promises an unprecedented sensitivity range that could measure magnetic fields from 10s T down to pT levels, surpassing existing solutions. The collaboration between the University of Warwick and NRC Canada ensures a comprehensive approach, combining academic research with industrial-scale manufacturing expertise. This project will lay the foundation for disruptive sensor technology, paving the way for applications in medical imaging, security, electronics, and beyond.
