Published purpose
This collaborative initiative forms a core component of the Volt‑Age Impact program, which advances the development of smart, resilient, and net‑zero‑energy buildings and infrastructure. The project focuses on modelling, designing, and demonstrating integrated energy systems that support carbon neutrality through coordinated use of renewable energy, battery storage, thermal storage, and optimized grid interaction. Key technological solutions include building‑integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems, hybrid BIPV/thermal (BIPV/T) systems, semitransparent photovoltaic (STPV) glazing, solar and geothermal de‑icing systems, heat pumps, and advanced HVAC technologies. Anticipated outcomes include prefabricated modular energy systems, optimized methodologies for achieving net‑zero energy performance, and a roadmap to inform future standards and policies for a resilient, decarbonized built environment. This work is conducted in partnership with the National Research Council of Canada.
