Published purpose

The Project is a collaboration between Dr. Louis Gaudreau at NRC’s Quantum and Nanotechnologies Research Centre and Qubic Inc., a Canadian startup developing low-heat dissipation, broadband cryogenic amplifiers. The goal is to test and optimize a kinetic-inductance traveling-wave parametric amplifier (KITWPA) to improve the readout of superconducting microwave resonators used in NRC’s microwave-to-optical quantum transducer. Qubic will design, fabricate, and iterate to improve prototype amplifiers, while NRC will benchmark their performance on resonators coupled to spin and superconducting qubits. These KITWPAs aim to replace heat-dissipating HEMT amplifiers and support scalable quantum computing and sensing. The collaboration will validate KI-TWPAs at temperatures ranging from millikelvin to 4 Kelvin, refine amplifier integration and control electronics, and help advance the technology from TRL 6 to TRL 9, positioning Canada for leadership in quantum devices and quantum-enhanced sensing.
