Published purpose
Quantum technologies are poised to be the next revolution in computing, communication, and sensing. With the growing demands of quantum technologies, accurate primary cryogenic thermometry is a valuable market. These technologies generally require low temperatures and subsequently require precise thermometry, yet most thermometers in this temperature range are expensive, complex, inaccurate, or irreproducible. The Project explores primary “quantum correlation thermometers” that reference a mechanical noise temperature to quantum photon shot noise and address the above challenges. The goal is therefore to develop a new electromechanical noise-based thermometer that can be “self-calibrated” and used for measurements below 1 K, where quantum technologies thrive. It will be compared to international temperature standards in collaboration with the NRC metrology team.
