This project supports the 2020-21 Tanzania Demographic Health Survey (TDHS), which includes the Malaria Indicator Survey and the Micronutrient Survey. The overall objective of the survey is to produce results in a timely manner and ensure that the data is disseminated widely so that it is useful to program managers and policy makers in government and non-governmental organizations. Project activities include: (1) supporting Tanzania’s own human resources to foster and reinforce Tanzania’s ownership of data collection, analysis, presentation and use; and (2) strengthening national capacities to use the survey data to identify and address demographic and health-related social needs, develop strategies for equitable growth and social poverty reduction, and link these strategies to national development plans. The survey is undertaken in a representative sample of women ages 15-49 years and children under five years from 16,354 households from all 31 regions in the country, as well as men aged 15-49 years in half of the households. The survey is designed to produce representative estimates of the main demographic and health indictors for the country as a whole as well as the following breakdowns: urban and rural at the country-wide level, Dar es Salaam, the Tanzanian mainland, urban Zanzibar, rural Zanzibar, Zanzibar and nine geographical zones. This information is vital for effective planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation for health, nutrition and gender equality interventions, including those in maternal, newborn, adolescent and child health and sexual and reproductive health and rights.
