December 2022 - Food insecurity hit record levels in 2022 due to increasing conflict, climate change, COVID-19 disruptions, and inflation. Russia’s invasion compounded pre-existing issues, further disrupting global food and energy markets. This has increased the number of people requiring humanitarian assistance. Latest estimates indicate 349 million people will be acutely food insecure in 82 countries by the end of 2022 (up from 135 million in 2019). As many as 60 million children under five could be acutely malnourished by the end of 2022, and eight million children in 15 countries are at risk of dying from acute malnutrition. With GAC support in humanitarian emergencies, the World Food Programme (WFP) responds to this situation by facilitating shipments of Ukrainian grain to countries experiencing acute food insecurity, such as Sudan and Yemen. Project activities include: (1) transporting and storing wheat from Ukraine; (2) distributing wheat to vulnerable populations; and (3) providing in-kind emergency food assistance to vulnerable food insecure populations.
