On May 14, Cyclone Mocha crossed the coast in Rakhine State in Myanmar, bringing flooding, landslides and strong winds to an area of high pre-existing vulnerability, with large numbers of displaced, returned, stateless and crisis affected people. Nearly 3.2 million are considered to be most vulnerable to the cyclone impact based on analysis of shelter quality, food insecurity and coping capacity. Houses, sanitation facilities, and public infrastructure were damaged or destroyed by the cyclone. The Cyclone has also impacted Bangladesh with nearly 430,000 affected people, over 2,000 destroyed houses and more than 10,600 damaged houses across the Chattogram Division. With GAC’s support, the World Food Programme (WFP) is working to save lives and help reduce the suffering of people affected by Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar. Project activities include: (1) delivering in-kind food assistance to people in need; (2) making multi-purpose cash transfers to cover immediate food needs and support livelihoods; and (3) providing logistical support to the emergency response.
