March 2018 – The conflict between Boko Haram and Nigerian armed forces has devastated communities in north-eastern Nigeria. It is estimated that 10.2 million people will require humanitarian assistance in order to survive in 2018, of which 85% are women and children. As the conflict evolves, humanitarian access remains a challenge. Assistance for basic survival, basic services and protection is vital for displaced populations, host communities and vulnerable people across the north-east. With GAC’s support, Save the Children Canada is helping to assist more than 109,000 conflict-affected people in Borno state. Project activities include: (1) providing treatment to children under five suffering from severe acute malnutrition and diseases that exacerbate malnutrition, benefiting more than 28,000 children; (2) providing hygiene promotion activities, with a focus on improving nutrition outcomes, benefiting more than 102,000 people; (3) providing psychosocial support and life skills training to girls and boys aged 3-17, benefiting up to 7,060 people; and (4) providing case management, response services and referrals to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, unaccompanied and separated children, children associated with armed forces and armed groups, adolescent heads of household and other at-risk girls and boys, benefiting up to 9,050 people.
