This project supports the initiative created by the Terrorism Prevention Branch (TPB) of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC), which aims to build upon and complement ongoing UNODC/TPB cooperation with Member States from the MENA region. This initiative works to develop an effective and sustainable legal regime against Foreign Terrorist Fighters (FTFs), embedded in the rule of law, due process and human rights. Project activities include: (1) facilitating specialized national workshops in Egypt, Iraq, and Lebanon entitled “prevention and countering the financing of terrorism in the context of FTF: investigations and prosecution”; and (2) facilitating two sub-regional workshops entitled “enhancing judicial and operational cooperation to counter the FTF threat”. The project expects to directly benefit officials from across the criminal justice system that deal with counter-terrorism issues including judges, prosecutors, police forces and others.
