January 2017 - This project is part of the 2017 United Nations-coordinated Humanitarian Response Plan for the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Projects under this appeal help to reduce the vulnerability of Palestinians, especially women and children, affected by the ongoing crisis. Palestinians endure high rates of poverty, unemployment, and food insecurity. Internal displacement and recurrent conflict have eroded coping mechanisms and necessitate a humanitarian response focused on protection. Of the 4.8 million people who live in the West Bank and Gaza, the United Nations estimates that approximately two million will need some form of humanitarian assistance in 2017. With GAC’s support, the World Food Programme (WFP) helps to reduce the vulnerability of Palestinians, especially women and children, affected by the ongoing crisis by providing food assistance to 482,000 non-refugee Palestinians who have no access to safe, sufficient and nutritious food. Project activities include general distribution of in-kind food, as well as cash-based transfers that allow families to use electronic vouchers to purchase food at local shops. Beneficiaries include 245,000 Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip (118,250 women, 126,750 men) and 237,000 living in the West Bank (122,730 women, 114,270 men).
