October 2016 – On October 4, Hurricane Matthew, a Category 4 storm, tore through the Caribbean causing widespread damage, flooding and displacement in Haiti. Hurricane Matthew has resulted in the largest humanitarian crisis in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake. An estimated 1.2 million people have been affected. With GAC’s support, the Canadian Red Cross is dispatching relief supplies from warehouses in Mississauga Ontario to support emergency relief operations in Haiti. The relief supplies are being distributed by the Haitian Red Cross Society, to help meet the immediate needs of up to 2,000 families affected by the hurricane. The relief supplies include tarpaulins and shelter toolkits to help provide temporary shelter, basic household items such as kitchen sets and hygiene kits (including soap and toothbrushes), as well as containers to safely transport clean water.
